ITDP recently assisted Mexico City’s local bicycle advocacy group, Bicitekas, in creating a new page book that showcases the stories of 41 urban cyclists between the ages of 9 and 75. According to Ruth Pérez López, the book’s editor, the stories were collected from people from a wide range of professions and neighborhoods in Mexico City, and together illustrate the diversity of bicycle commuters in the city.
Bicitekas hopes the book will be a tool for social change, showing people how their individual actions can help improve quality of life in Mexico City.
Bernardo Baranda, director for Latin America Policy for ITDP, said that this book is an important way to promote cycling but more remains to be done.
“We need initiatives like Ecobici Reform or bike path to be replicated in other parts of the city. We also need more integration of public transport with cycling. And we need to ensure that the next City administration continues to promote cycling.”
