Energy and Electric Vehicles Technology Associate

Jakarta, Indonesia

ITDP seeks an Energy and Electric Vehicles Technology Associate to help implement sustainable transportation principles, best practices, and project examples throughout Indonesia. Our Indonesia office is fast-paced and ambitious, with projects in Jakarta and projects starting or in development in nine other cities around the country.

In the energy and electric vehicles program, we support national and provincial governments and agencies, transit agencies, and the private sector on a wide range of consulting projects involving public electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructures, battery storage systems, fleet electrification, transport decarbonization studies, equity analysis, and policy analysis. We are looking for exceptionally talented, bright, and driven people who have experience and interest in the field of clean energy and sustainable transportation, preferably across several modes and breadth of the subject matter.

The candidate will work closely with senior staff to perform policy research, qualitative and quantitative market research, evaluation, and other technical assistance related to electric mobility. The ideal candidate should be detail-oriented, motivated, and capable of creative problem-solving and independent work. The candidate should also have working knowledge across topics such as distributed energy sources, sustainable transportation planning, and electric mobility deployment. The successful candidate is able to work collaboratively, can manage assigned tasks and projects from start to finish with input from supervisors, and has strong written, verbal, and analytical skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Deliver projects that expand and increase the availability of EV charging infrastructure and networks, to increase the adoption of light-, medium-, and heavy-duty electric vehicles.
  • Analyze the impacts on electricity demand and load for different EVs adoption and charging network scenarios.
  • Analyze best practices to promote the deployment of electric mobility, critically assessing the role of regulations, incentives, and charging infrastructure.
  • Collect data and maintain databases on EV technology, battery technology, including charging infrastructure technology data and information.
  • Analyze renewable energy potential penetration/share to supply the electricity demand from the deployment of EVs.
  • Quantify energy savings, emission reductions, and cost implications of EV adoption.
  • Analyze EV charging infrastructure-related issues.
  • Help facilitate policy and technical exchanges for policymakers.
  • Support the Southeast Asia Director in close collaboration with principals to ensure timely delivery of project deliverables to clients.
  • Conduct surveys, interviews, and quantitative analyses, focused on technical, policy, and/or financial implications of EVs, charging stations, and clean transportation technologies.
  • Conduct research and analysis across a range of EV pilot projects, programs, and policies.
  • Manage the work of project teams as assigned, monitoring project schedules, budgets, and scopes against the plan.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master Degree or M.Sc. (or Bachelor of Science/Engineering degree, with 2-4 years relevant experience) in electrical engineering, science, transportation, renewable energy, other engineering, or related fields.
  • Understanding of—or the ability to quickly come up to speed on—concepts related to clean energy, EVs, charging stations, fleets, and sustainable transportation planning. This includes developing a basic understanding of relevant concepts in the energy industry including renewables, grid impacts, and energy cost management.
  • Excellent demonstrated skills in data collection, research, analytical methods, and drawing conclusions from analytical research.
  • Excellent writing, communication, and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and English communication skills, both written and verbal, plus reading and writing proficiency in a second language strongly preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail.
  • The ability to manage deadlines across multiple simultaneous projects.
  • A strong network of transportation or clean energy professionals.
  • Project management and budget management experience.
  • Strong quantitative and analytics skills with advanced proficiency for modeling and analysis in multiple software tools such as Excel, database software, PowerBI, GIS, R, Stata, and other relevant tools
  • Candidates must be eligible to live in or will relocate to Jakarta.

Transport Associate

Jakarta, Indonesia

ITDP seeks a Transport Associate to help implement sustainable transportation principles, best practices, and project examples throughout Indonesia. Our Indonesia office is fast-paced and ambitious, with projects in Jakarta and projects starting or in development in nine other cities around the country.

The candidate will work both in the office and off-site, developing plans to implement best practice projects in areas such as Public Transport, Non-Motorized Transport, and Transport Planning, to create sustainable transportation and sustainable urban development in cities throughout Indonesia and around the world.

The ideal candidate will have either a strong background in transportation engineering and planning, public transportation planning; or a strong background in science and engineering with a deep interest in urban transport and urban planning. The ideal candidate should also have a passion for achieving sustainable transportation in Indonesia.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with senior staff in Indonesia and other global ITDP offices to implement transportation projects in Jakarta and other cities in Indonesia.
  • Develop plans to improve Public Transit in major cities in Indonesia, as well as to improve the established Bus Rapid Transit in Jakarta and other cities.
  • Conducting surveys and data collection on the transport-related area and interpret the data to become understandable for decision-makers
  • Working with other staff to develop recommendations for decision-makers in cities throughout Indonesia as well as for the national government of Indonesia
  • Working with other staff to organize workshops, panel discussions, etc. on various transport-related issues
  • Assist and monitor project implementations and supervise third-party consultants/contractors working on transportation projects
  • Write technical reports and recommendations on transport-related issues
  • Prepare presentations on technical transport recommendations and communicate them to the stakeholders involved
  • Support the Communications division in raising awareness on various transport-related issues, and provide the necessary data to create mainstream media awareness in sustainable transportation
  • Help the Communications division to write press releases on transport-related issues
  • Plan special transport-related events as needed/requested by supervisors
  • If required, assist local and international delegations visiting Transjakarta and other ITDP project sites

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Fluent in Bahasa and English
  • University Degree in engineering; Transportation or Civil Engineering are strongly preferred
  • Master degree with at least two years of work experience
  • Excellent technical and analytical skills
  • Good writing skill is required but not essential
  • Willingness to develop new ideas for improvement
  • Willingness and ability to plan and conduct site visits and surveys
  • Ability and desire to quickly learn new information
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize
  • Ability to use Drawing, CAD, and GIS software
  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Live in or will relocate to Jakarta

Senior Transport Manager

Jakarta, Indonesia

ITDP Indonesia is seeking a Senior Transport Manager, senior staff with 5-7 years of experience. The Manager will work closely with the Southeast Asia Director to advance ITDP’s strategic goals in the region. Based in Jakarta, the Manager provides essential support to current ITDP programs and assists with developing new program opportunities. In collaboration with the Southeast Asia Director, the Manager will supervise technical work in Southeast Asia. The Manager will promote, plan and facilitate transit and urban development projects in Southeast Asia, provide technical advice in analysis, design, and implementation of public transport and urban development-related projects, promote best practices in public transport, and the transformation of urban development including research in public transport related subjects.

The Manager will report to the Southeast Asia Director. The Manager will manage staff in the ITDP Indonesia office in Jakarta and will be expected to collaborate with senior management, senior government officials, and business leaders.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical and Policy Responsibilities

  • Implement project activities, including: 
    • Collect, compile and analyze data for technical assessments and case studies.
    • Prepare presentations and write technical reports and encourage buy-ins from related stakeholders
    • Manage the dialog and participate in the execution of activities with international consultants and partners in Southeast Asia.
    • Manage workshops, events, capacity-building activities, and campaigns. 
  • Work with Southeast Asia Director to oversee program work on policy at the city, state, and national levels to ensure government institutions and funding are aligned with sustainable transportation.
  • Work with Southeast Asia Director to oversee policy work to prioritize safe, sustainable transport and discourage unsafe, unstainable options through measures such as parking, low emissions zones, congestion charging, and urban development through dense and compact development.
  • Assist Southeast Asia Director to develop partnerships with local authorities, international and national agencies, other NGOs and research institutes, or other valuable contacts as a means to scale ITDP’s impact and expand programming into new topics, cities, or countries in accordance with ITDP’s mission.

Management

  • Ensure that projects are high quality, well documented, and effective; work directly with Southeast Asia Director and staff to ensure that projects are implemented in compliance with ITDP and donor financial policies.
  • Directly manage staff, ensuring a good working environment and professional fulfillment.

Communications

  • Represent ITDP in public forums and public communications. Serve as an articulate, persuasive, and effective spokesperson for ITDP and its mission, goals, and successes to the external community.
  • Maintain sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with outside organizations that are critical to the achievement of ITDP’s mission.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in transportation, urban planning, economics, engineering, political science, energy or related field required.
  • 5-7 years’ progressive experience in the sustainable transport field.
  • Strong commitment to advancing ITDP’s mission and to environmental and social justice with an excellent command of sustainable transportation issues and approaches in Southeast Asia. 
  • Proven ability to manage a team with high morale and performance, and to collaborate effectively in an international organization with people of diverse cultures, perspectives, and ideas.
  • An intuitive problem solver and motivator who can analyze complex issues and develop effective solutions that enhance ITDP’s relationships, goals and initiatives.
  • Strong commitment to the professional development of staff. 
  • Outstanding presentation and communication skills; demonstrated ability to be an outgoing spokesperson and relationship builder.
  • Excellent coalition-building skills with an ability to communicate and work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Fluency in Bahasa Indonesia and English is required. 
  • Ability to travel internationally on a frequent basis.
