Expansion of the popular bike sharing system in Mexico City, Ecobici, was officiated on September 12th by Mayor Ebrard. Implementation of Phase 2 included 78 new stations and 1,180 new bikes that stretch over four districts in two municipalities, Cuauhtémoc and Miguel Hidalgo: Anzures, Polanco, Granada, Ampliación Granada, Bosque de Chapultepec, Juárez, Roma Norte, Doctores and Centro Histórico.
Phase 3, which is currently in the planning process, will launch in mid-November. This step will bring public bikes to the iconic Reforma Avenue and the surrounding area, as the map shows:
To date, Ecobici has 31,000 active users, amounting to 9,000 trips daily. The goal with phase 2 and the upcoming phase 3 is to reach 73,000 users and 27, 500 daily trips. Once all phases are complete, the system will have 4,000 bikes and 275 stations. Ecobici remains the second largest bike sharing system in the western hemisphere, surpassed only by the Bixi system in Montreal (Canada) by number of bikes and stations.
The Ecobici network extends over 13.8 square kilometers in Mexico City, including the Polanco district, where local residents initially had strong opposition to this new mobility system on their streets. Martha Delgado, Environment Minister of the city, stated in the periodical Excélsior that some of the most problematic stations in Polanco were re-positioned after user feedback. Ecobici continues to demonstrate how such a system offers new mobility solutions to the people of Mexico City.
