ITDP Indonesia at Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week (ISEW) 2024: Accelerating Electrification Requires Government Support

Gonggomtua Sitanggang, Southeast Asia Director ITDP, participated as a panelist in the "Empowering Communities and Revolutionizing Urban Transport: Private Sector Innovations in Renewable Energy and Green Mobility Solutions" session

Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week (ISEW) 2024, hosted by Bappenas and MEMR and organized by GIZ and IESR, took place from September 10-13, 2024. The event facilitated high-level dialogues between Indonesia and Germany to promote global and national energy transitions, bridging policymakers with the public, including civil society, academia, and other stakeholders. It aimed to raise awareness among the public and private sectors, as well as communities, on viable technology, policy, and business solutions for Indonesia’s energy transition.

ITDP Indonesia participated in Day 4 of ISEW, represented by Gonggomtua Sitanggang, Southeast Asia Director of ITDP, as a panelist in a session titled “Empowering Communities and Revolutionizing Urban Transport: Private Sector Innovations in Renewable Energy and Green Mobility Solutions.” Joining him on the panel were Rivana Mezaya, Sustainability Director of GRAB, and Vicarna Yasier, Director of PT Optima Integra Tehnika.

When asked about the challenges facing sustainable transport systems in Indonesian cities, Gonggom emphasized the need to improve the quality of pedestrian and cycling infrastructure to encourage a shift from private motorized vehicles to public transport. During the discussion on electrification, he also stressed that government support through regulations and incentives is crucial for accelerating the development of sustainable electrification ecosystems in Indonesia.
