The Launch of Bijak Memantau: ITDP Indonesia Supports Sustainable Transport Issues as a Knowledge Partner

The Bijak Memantau platform (bijakmemantau.id) was officially launched on May 20, 2025, to bridge the gap between the public and the fast-paced legislative dynamics. The platform builds on the Bijak Memilih political education initiative from the 2024 elections, to encourage sustained public participation beyond the election period.

Andhyta Firselly Utami, CEO of Think Policy and representative of the Bijak Secretariat stated at the launch event in Jakarta that good public policy stems from a healthy ecosystem—where the government is responsive, the public is engaged, and there is a meaningful bridge for participation. She highlighted that while many young people and members of the middle class are eager to get involved, the available spaces for participation are often limited and symbolic. “Bijak Memantau was created to address this challenge by opening access, simplifying complex issues, and fostering more substantive participation,” she said.

During the launch discussion, economist and former Minister of Finance (2013–2014) Chatib Basri emphasized the crucial role of the middle class in shaping public policy. “Democracy is essentially how we place checks on state power. In that context, public involvement is essential,” he noted. He added that Bijak Memantau plays a vital role in providing context and accurate information for the middle class to advocate for key issues.

Bijak Memantau partners with a range of organizations with expertise across various issues to ensure the credibility and impartiality of its content. ITDP Indonesia is among the platform’s knowledge partners, contributing research insights on sustainable transport. Through this collaboration, it is hoped that knowledge and awareness of sustainable mobility will reach a broader audience via the Bijak Memantau platform.

Bijak Memantau features three main tools designed for accessibility and ease of understanding:

  1. Understanding the Issues: Offers summaries of eight priority policy issues such as education, health, economy, and the environment, complete with relevant actors, regulations, and institutional context. Content is developed in collaboration with experts and knowledge partners from civil society, academia, and research institutions to ensure accuracy.
  2. Monitoring Policies: Provides up-to-date information on the progress of Bills (Rancangan Undang-Undang/RUU) within the National Legislation Program (Prolegnas) as well as those under public scrutiny.
  3. Monitoring Officials: Presents brief profiles of legislative members, their positions on key issues, and communication channels for constituents to express their aspirations.

Beyond informational features, Bijak Memantau encourages deeper participation through the Bijak Community. The public can join online discussions via Discord, participate in Bijak Classes, attend town hall forums, and even engage in advocacy efforts alongside civil society organizations, transforming opinions into real action.
