MoU Signing of the Women Empowerment Program: ITDP Indonesia and Transjakarta Advance Women’s Empowerment for Inclusive and Sustainable Public Transport
On August 28, 2025, ITDP Indonesia and PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Women Empowerment Program. With support from UNEP and BMZ Germany, the initiative is delivered through the Transjakarta (TJ) Academy, which delivers the second cohort of the women-focused bus driver training program.
The signing was carried out by Gonggomtua Sitanggang, Southeast Asia Director of ITDP, and Welfizon Yuza, President Director of Transjakarta, accompanied by Mayangsari Dian Irwantari, Director of Finance, Human Resources, and General Affairs of Transjakarta.
This agreement marks a new chapter in the effort to deliver higher-quality, inclusive, and sustainable public transport.
“This program aligns with ITDP Global’s vision to increase public transport usage through inclusive and sustainable services, including through women’s empowerment. We hope TJ Academy grows not only as a driver training program but also as a platform to develop the BRT ecosystem as a whole,” said Gonggomtua Sitanggang, Southeast Asia Director ITDP, in his remarks.
Echoing this sentiment, Mayangsari, Director of Finance, Human Resources, and General Affairs of Transjakarta, stated, “This initiative promotes gender equality by opening more opportunities for women in the transport sector. It also demonstrates Transjakarta’s commitment to building a public transport system that serves all communities.”
Building on insights from a joint study with UNEP and the momentum of Transjakarta’s bus electrification, TJ Academy Batch 2 was created to expand opportunities for women to become bus drivers. The training not only focuses on strengthening technical and service skills, but also integrates gender equality, women’s empowerment, and an introduction to the electric bus ecosystem.
In its implementation, ITDP is committed to supporting curriculum development, providing facilitators, and reviewing the learning process as the foundation for the long-term design of TJ Academy. It is hoped that TJ Academy Batch 2, together with its review, can be adopted as part of a sustainable learning program that further expands and strengthens women’s participation in the public transport sector.
