ITDP Indonesia Encourages the Public to Move Towards Inclusive, Affordable, and Low-Emission E-Mobility at MOV-E
ITDP Indonesia, along with ViriyaENB and ENVELOPS Co., Ltd., organized a public outreach event titled “MOV-E: Moving Cities the Electric Way” on 1 November 2025 at the ATMAterra Amphitheatre, Atma Jaya Catholic University, Semanggi. The event served as a collaborative platform for various stakeholders to raise public awareness, understanding, and participation in accelerating the transition to a low emission mobility system.
Opening the event, Gonggomtua Sitanggang, Southeast Asia Director of ITDP, emphasized that transitioning to sustainable mobility should not rely solely on private electric vehicles but must focus on strengthening electric public transport services, especially buses. “Electrification is not the only solution. This effort must be accompanied by the provision of quality public transport, including electric buses,” he stated.
Next, Han Seung Yeun, Director and Co-Founder of ENVELOPS, introduced innovations that combine solar panel systems with agricultural land to generate clean energy, supporting the expansion of e-mobility in Indonesia. “We believe this technology can play an important role in supporting the growth of e-mobility worldwide, particularly through rural electrification,” said Han Seung Yeun.
Closing the opening remarks, Yusuf Nugroho, Director of Road Transport Facilities and Safety at the Ministry of Transportation, reaffirmed government support for developing a comprehensive and sustainable electric vehicle ecosystem. “Synergy between the government, academia, businesses, and the community is key. Cross-sector collaboration is essential to ensure the electric vehicle ecosystem develops efficiently and sustainably.”
MOV-E featured two talkshow sessions focusing on electrification from the perspectives of two-wheeler vehicles and urban public transport. The first session, “Two Wheelers, Zero Emissions,” was moderated by Yosifebi Ramadhani from Think Policy and featured speakers including Alitt Susanto, Content Creator; Riniwaty Sinaga, Public Relations, Indonesian Electric Motorcycle Industry Association (AISMOLI); Professor Joonho Ko, Advisor at Hanyang University/ENVELOPS; and Kemal Fardianto, Transport Associate ITDP Indonesia.
The first talkshow highlighted the crucial role of electric two-wheelers in reducing road transport emissions—which contribute approximately 90% of total transport sector emissions in Indonesia. Although motorcycles account for 83.7% of all vehicles in the country, the adoption of electric motorcycles remains below 0.12%. Government subsidies are considered insufficient and need to be complemented with broader strategies, including industry strengthening and creating economies of scale.
In addition, electric bicycles were highlighted as having significant potential to strengthen public transport connectivity, as demonstrated through an Agrivoltaic (APV)-based e-bike study at IPB developed in collaboration with Korea Energy Agency, Korea East West Power, and ENVELOPS, serving as a model of low-emission mobility solutions that could be applied in other cities.
The second talkshow session, “Scaling Up Buses, Improving Lives,” featured Samuel Ray, Content Creator; Albert Aulia Ilyas, CEO of Kalista; Deliani Siregar, Deputy Director of ITDP Indonesia; Cecilia Novanca (Jaki Maulana), Content Creator; with Puty Puar, Founder of Buibu Bijak, as moderator. The discussion focused on the potential of urban public transport electrification, particularly buses, to reduce emissions while enhancing service quality.
Electric buses offer benefits such as reduced air pollution and significant operational cost savings, but challenges remain. From an industry perspective, Albert Aulia Ilyas highlighted two main issues: operational planning, often considered underdeveloped, particularly in critical route determination, and the readiness of supporting infrastructure, including electricity availability and charging facilities. To accelerate the transition, ITDP encourages cross-sector collaboration, including involving content creators to raise public understanding and acceptance, as well as implementing policies that ensure inclusive bus design and optimized urban planning. “Electrification is the main momentum for bus quality improvement. Regarding inclusivity, there is plenty of space for us to provide more opportunities for everyone,” Deliani Siregar explained.
Beyond the talkshows, MOV-E also featured an electric vehicle exhibition and interactive installations showcasing various low-emission mobility innovations. Visitors could engage directly with products from ENVELOPS, Indomobil E-Motor, ALVA, as well as Wuling electric minibuses and electric tricycles. The event involved various communities and organizations, including CISDI, Kawula17, and the Jakarta Transport Discussion Forum (FDTJ), enriching public perspectives on the intersection of mobility, health, and urban sustainability.
