ITDP Indonesia Introduces Sustainable Transport at ‘Cities, Explained!’

ITDP Indonesia participated in the “Cities, Explained!” session organized by Urun Daya Kota on 31 January 2026 at the Wahyu Sihombing Theatre, Taman Ismail Marzuki. As part of The City Meetup series, the session brought together 75 participants to rotate through three classes to explore various urban issues—ranging from citizens’ rights, blue and green spaces, to public transportation—while also reflecting on what an ideal future city might look like.

During the session, Rifqi Khoirul Anam and Syifa Maudini, Transport Associates at ITDP Indonesia, together with Adriansyah Yasin from the Jakarta Transportation Discussion Forum (FDTJ), presented the topic “From A to Z: Everything About Public Transportation in the City!”  to broaden public understanding of sustainable transportation in Jakarta.

The discussion opened with an overview of Jakarta’s population and the available transportation modes. With a population approaching 42 million, urban development in Jakarta continues to show a reliance on private vehicles, despite public transportation services reaching the majority of residents. Various barriers have also prevented some communities from fully shifting to public transport, contributing to congestion and pollution risks in several areas.

The session then introduced the A-S-I (Avoid–Shift–Improve) strategic framework as a core principle of sustainable transportation to address congestion and reduce air pollution. One of the key approaches discussed was the electrification of public transport, which offers cost efficiency while contributing to emissions reduction and long-term urban sustainability.
