As the capital of Central Java Province, Semarang covers an area of 373.78 km² and is home to over 1.7 million people (according to 2016 data). It’s becoming increasingly important to enhance the efficiency of its transportation system. While public transportation options such as regular buses and Trans Semarang are available, private private motor vehicles still dominate the mode share in Semarang. As of 2023, Trans Semarang operates eight main and four feeder routes, with an average of 40,000 daily trips. However, with public transport usage currently at just 7%, the city faces a significant challenge in reaching its 20% target by 2030.
ITDP Indonesia, an NGO focused on promoting sustainable transportation, is committed to assisting municipal governments in Indonesia in improving their public transport systems. For Semarang, ITDP has proposed a range of strategies to enhance Trans Semarang and elevate it to an internationally recognized BRT system. Beyond the implementation of a fully dedicated BRT corridor with special lanes, ITDP also recommends the development of a Green Corridor.
