Handover and Dissemination of the Study on “Green Corridor Development in Semarang City”

ITDP Indonesia, with support from the UK Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transition (UK PACT), officially handed over the results of the study “Green Corridor Development in Semarang” to the Semarang City Government during a dissemination event held on April 29, 2025, in Semarang. The study, which was conducted since 2023, aims to support the Semarang City Government in formulating strategic measures for green corridor development, as well as to serve as a reference for other cities in Indonesia in designing sustainable and systematic public transportation systems.

The study document was handed over by Gonggomtua Sitanggang, Southeast Asia Director of ITDP, to Budi Prakosa, S.T., M.T., Head of Semarang City Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda). The submission of the document was also witnessed by Sigit Irfansyah, A.T.D., M.Sc., Plt. Director of Intermodal Transportation Integration System and Services, and Maria Renny Herdanti, Cities and Transport Lead from the British Embassy in Jakarta.

The handover and dissemination event of the study was also attended by Marse Hendra Saputra, S.STP, Head of the Bogor City Transportation Agency; Achmad Suhaely, Head of the Tangerang City Transportation Agency; H. R. Yana Suyatna, S.IP, M.Si, Head of the Bekasi Regency Transportation Agency; as well as representatives from the Governments of Bekasi City, Depok City, and Tangerang Regency.

The Green Corridor concept is designed to integrate various policy measures that prioritize low-emission mobility on designated city routes. The goal is to reduce congestion and improve air quality through a strategy of developing reliable public transportation, providing pedestrian and cycling facilities, effective parking management, and limiting the use of private vehicles.

In his remarks, Budi Prakosa, S.T., M.T., Head of the Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda) of Semarang City, expressed, “The Semarang City Government welcomes ITDP’s recommendations for the development of the Green Corridor, which aligns with the city’s development direction, including the expansion of dedicated BRT lanes and non-motorized transport infrastructure.”

Sigit Irfansyah, A.T.D., M.Sc., Acting Director of Intermodal Transport System and Service Integration, praised Semarang City’s efforts and expressed hope that this initiative would inspire other cities, especially in the Metropolitan Jakarta (Bodetabek) area. “In the next five years, we hope to see more public transport corridors develop, with improved service quality, the construction of bike lanes, more effective parking policies, and an integrated transport system,” he stated.

Echoing this sentiment, Maria Renny Herdanti, Cities and Transport Lead at the British Embassy, emphasized the importance of collaboration in developing the Green Corridor study and reaffirmed the UK Government’s support in creating livable cities through sustainable transport and safe, comfortable, and inclusive active mobility. “Hopefully, this event will be a momentum for us to move forward together, collaborate, and continue to innovate for a better transport future. We hope this study document serves as a concrete first step toward realizing the dream of a safe, healthy, and sustainable city.”

The handover and dissemination of the study document was followed by a site visit to several strategic points in Semarang City’s transport system. Representatives from the cities and regencies of Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi participated in the visit, which included Trans Semarang BRT services, the inclusive bus stop at Simpang Lima, and the electronic parking management system on Jalan Depok. This activity provided participants the opportunity to directly observe best practices in managing environmentally friendly, inclusive, and integrated public transportation.
