ITDP Indonesia at the “Tactical Urbanism and Digital Mapping to Achieve Low Carbon Transport in Indonesia” Site Visit and Workshop

On December 11, 2024, ITDP Indonesia participated in a site visit and workshop titled “Tactical Urbanism and Digital Mapping to Achieve Low Carbon Transport in Indonesia,” organized by Clean Air Asia at Ashley Wahid Hasyim, Central Jakarta. The event was attended by provincial government representatives from various cities and aimed to help local governments better understand the tactical urbanism approach in sustainable transportation planning.

In collaboration with Bike to Work, ITDP Indonesia organized a cycling tour as part of the site visit and provided insights during the workshop session. The bike tour took participants from Ashley Wahid Hasyim to the Sudirman-Thamrin area to observe protected bike lanes. At a stop in the Sudirman-Thamrin area, Ciptaghani Antasaputra, Sr. Transport & Design Engineering Associate at ITDP Indonesia, explained how the bike lanes designed using a participatory approach, which included involving vulnerable groups in a joint survey to ensure the lane width could accommodate the needs of vulnerable cyclists, often using modified tricycles.

During the workshop, Ghani shared that ITDP Indonesia’s approach to designing bike lanes with tactical urbanism starts with mapping issues and conducting field surveys. This is followed by temporary measures, like Pop-up Bike Lanes made from simple materials. After testing and evaluation, the design is then made permanent. Ghani also highlighted the importance of involving the community at every stage of transportation planning and testing. Community events or activations are crucial to ensuring that the design aligns with users’ needs and expectations before it becomes a permanent fixture.
