Buibu Baca Buku Book Club and ITDP Indonesia Foster Greater Climate Awareness Among Mothers

n Saturday, May 30, 2026, ITDP Indonesia participated in an event titled “Buibu Berdaya Bumi – From Literacy to Action” held at the Galeri Emiria Soenassa, Taman Ismail Marzuki, Central Jakarta. Organized by the Buibu Baca Buku Book Club (bbbbookclub) with support from Climate Works Foundation, the event focused on the strategic role of mothers in communicating climate issues within their families and wider social circles. By equipping mothers with adequate knowledge, the event aimed to help them better understand how the climate crisis intersects with everyday life and encourage more proactive action on global warming.

As part of bbbbookclub’s program that day, ITDP contributed to several activities. The first was a tarot booth, where visitors could draw tarot cards featuring present-day urban challenges. After selecting a card, ITDP staff facilitated discussions around the issue presented and explored possible solutions. Participants could also take the card home as a piece of merchandise.

This was followed by the “Read Aloud and Bookish Play” session, where several communities read children’s books on topics such as the energy transition, food origins, and sustainable transportation to young audiences. ITDP’s children’s book, “The Adventures of Satya and Tara in the Magical City” was one of the featured books read during the session.

The day concluded with “Debate Club: The Pros and Cons of Urban Transportation.” Deliani Siregar and Fani Rachmita facilitated the session. Participants were given red and green cards to indicate disagreement or agreement with a series of prompts. The six prompts included: (1) “Electric buses are a waste of public spending”; (2) “Women face greater challenges using public transportation than men”; (3) “Public transportation is the solution to traffic congestion”; (4) “Cycling is not a realistic transport solution for mothers in Jakarta”; (5) “Jakarta’s traffic congestion could actually be solved within ten years — if there is political will”; and (6) “Our online shopping habits have nothing to do with the environment.”

Participants holding green and red cards were invited to explain their positions for two to three minutes. Facilitators then responded by presenting “cold facts” related to each statement. The debate session concluded with ITDP facilitators drawing out a common thread across the discussions and offering reflective takeaways for participants.

This event reflected a collaboration between ITDP, as a transportation research and advocacy organization in Indonesia, and the strength of bbbbookclub as an active, critical urban women’s community with broad reach — to foster deeper public conversations about cities and equitable mobility.
